Calving and Feeding Pads

Spending less money can lead to greater efficiencies and great returns.

Before you spend money unnecessarily of feed systems we suggest you read this.

Would you spend $50,000 when $10,000 would do the job better?

What a silly question!

I've recently spoken to a dairy farmer who was about to build a $50,000 loafing barn to calve his 300 milkers. To do the job properly, he would need a feeding area as well (and he still proposed to feed the milkers in the paddock!)

With a "WASTE-NOT" hayfeeding system next to the dairy - and no shed - he could:

  • Feed all his milkers as they leave the milking shed.
  • Feed 20-40 minutes of hay or silage to each cow night and morning if required- probably more than they get at present
  • Takes 15-20 minutes each third day to do all the feeding up "with whole rolls or big squares"
  • Eliminate waste from the system
  • Not need a feed cart or wagon (tying up a tractor)
  • Grow and utilise more pasture than ever ... that"s the whole point of a "Waste-Not" Fair Go Dairy Feed Pad
  • Save wear and tear on the lanes and wet paddocks.
  • Use the same Feeder for the springers and even the dry cows, (even better with an adjacent calving paddock or ricehull/sawdust pad as the "lounge room".)
  • Feed some grain to the springers to prepare their rumen for grain when they calve.

All this in one Feeder - in this case for 300 cows for a cost of around $10,000.

The secret? A rectangular "WASTE-NOT" FAIR GO DAIRY FEEDPAD long enough to hold three sides of the herringbone on each side of the Feeder.

If you're contemplating a calving pad or loafing barn, talk to us first.

If mud or waste is a problem on your dairy farm, your priorities should be a "Waste-Not" Fair Go Dairy Feed Pad ... on gravel with a wind break ...

Skip the loafing barn ... take a holiday in Queensland instead!
