John Greene, at Elmhurst Victoria, had 60 dairy yearlings from the Western District which he was contract grazing under the Heiferlink system.

Dismal Growth Rates

While feeding grain during autumn, growth rates were quite satisfactory at 0.5 to 0.6 kg/head/day until the grain ran out.

John says that when he proposed to switch to silage, the cattle owners were concerned that growth rates would fall.  The silage was analysed and its quality confirmed (35.9% DM; 18.5%CP; 66.5%D©value 9.3 ME)

John started feeding silage on the ground, but "they just trampled and shat on it."

When the heifers were weighed on June 30 the growth rate was a dismal 0.12 kg/day!

"They merely held their condition."

Add Wastenot Stockfeeder into the System

John invested in two "WASTENOT" STOCKFEEDERS delivered July 11.

Blocks of silage were dropped into the Feeders and were refilled when empty, about every second day.

Results were very impressive as shown by weights on August 25.

Now the increase was up to 0.73 kg/head/day.

"I know this sounds like a made up story but that's what happened," John said.
